Peaceful Side of the Smokies

Townsend

If you are finding yourself craving a tranquil retreat, we highly recommend a trip to the Peaceful Side of the Smokies known as the small town of Townsend, Tennessee.

Townsend is a breath of fresh air from the hustle and bustle of the touristy likes of Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge. Nestled right outside of Cades Cove-a popular destination in the Great Smoky Mountain National Park, Townsend offers a true mountain getaway like no other.

Stamp your passport:

The second location of Company Distilling features a 4,000 s.f. tasting room and restaurant along the Little River at the base of The Smokies. More than a tasting room… have a sip and stay awhile! The 13.5+ acre property offers access to cycling, running and nearby mountain biking and hiking trails.

Stay overnight:

Little Arrow Outdoor Resort features RV camping alongside Airstream, Cabin, Tiny Home and Glamping Tent rentals. Little arrow can be found at the entrance of the National Park and is nestled alongside The Little River. There’s something for everyone with amenities like a pool and hottub with grotto like water features, volley and basketball courts, dog park, playground and outdoor movie area.

Eat & Drink:

The Dancing Bear Appalachian Bistro is one of the finest restaurants in Townsend. Upon arrival, the ambience is set with a walkway of twinkle lights leading to the cabin-like structure and a large fire crackling in the courtyard. The restaurant sits where the sunset is in perfect view over the mountains; creating the ideal scenery for a memorable night out. Once inside, guests enjoy open air elements, fresh flowers on every table, and a delicious meal. Classically trained chef, Jeff Carter, has curated an Appalachian style, fine dining menu that rivals even the priciest of establishments in larger cities.

Must Try:

Any and everything on the menu, which changes quite frequently. Seriously, the flavor combination of every single thing is out of this world with much of it being house made or provided by local purveyors. Dancing Bear also holds the only full liquor license in the city and the bartender is as crafty as the cocktails on the menu. We highly recommend giving their “In Good Company” a try! It features Company Distilling Straight

Go on an adventure:

Where do we even start? The Little River in Townsend is quite popular for its fishing and in the summer, the waterways will be lined with folks splashing around and tubing in the crystal clear cold waters. Just on the border of the small town lies Great Smoky Mountain National Park and the ever so scenic Cades Cove historic settlement.

Waterfalls:

SMNP is home to over 200 waterfalls, many of which can be seen on the scenic drive winding through the mountains. One especially scenic stop is Spruce Flat Falls. If you find yourself in the area, we recommend this easy, 2 mile round trip hike! Longer hikes, just a short drive from Townsend will take you to Laurel and Abrams Falls.

Get the most out of your trip:

Grab a map or book on the falls of the Smokies before heading into the park as the cell service is terrible and they aren’t really labeled.
