Get Out And Enjoy The
GREAT OUTDOORS
These destination cities are known for their epic outdoor adventure sports. An added bonus are the distilleries located nearby!
Chattanooga, TN
Chattanooga is a hot spot for adventure sports enthusiasts. Not only will you find world-renowned rock climbing and bouldering destinations in and around the Chattanooga area, but also some of the most epic whitewater on the East Coast on the nearby Ocoee River. Add to that hundreds of miles of mountain biking trails and an unsurpassed hang gliding scene …. well, you get the picture! And after a hard day doing what you do best, there’s a great place to kick back and relax as you sample some might fine Tennessee whiskey at Chattanooga Whiskey Co. & Gate 11 Distillery in downtown Chattanooga, TN.
Knoxville, TN
Knoxville hasn’t always been a destination for mountain biking in the Southeast, but some recent national press and a huge investment by the community in the Urban Wilderness Program has lead to the creation of some absolutely wicked mountain biking within city limits. In fact, with over 80 miles of twisting singletrack, the sheer accessibility and convenience factor rivals that of some Colorado mountain towns. And the rolling hills paired with country roads in and around Knox County continue to attract cyclists of all abilities who want to soak in the beautiful East Tennessee scenery as they get their workout. While you’re visiting, you’ll surely want to stop by the two local distilleries on the Tennessee Whiskey Trail and sample some of Tennessee’s most innovative craft spirits at Knox Whiskey Works and Post Modern Spirits.
Hartford, TN
This tiny town on I-40, halfway between Asheville and Knoxville, is easy to overlook. But if you happen to get off on the [only] exit, you’re in for a treat. The Pigeon River rumbles through town and is home to over a dozen different whitewater rafting companies, as well as a a few whitewater kayaking establishments. Because the Pigeon River is controlled by a dam on the TN/NC border, the flow is predictable and provides for Class 1-4 rapids. An annual bike race also happens every fall—the Hardford Gravel Grinder—and the Appalachian Trail conveniently passes through town. Whether you’re getting wet on the river, riding a bike on the hundreds of miles of forest trails, or hiking a section of the Appalachian Trail, a stop at Bootleggers Distillery is a must.
